Health and stress metrics gathered from narwhal during capture-tagging and used to calculate the composite stress index (CSI, highlighted in bold). Variables, including the presence of (a) healed scars, (b) active wounds, (c) ectoparasites, (d) predators (KW), (e) calves, (f) negative body condition index (BCI) residuals and elevated levels of hormones including (g) cortisol (h) DHEA-S and (i) cortisol/DHEA ratio. Each stress index parameter was scored by relative severity, when measured. The total additive score across parameters was then scaled according to the number of available dimensions (# dims).
