The American Journal of Hypertension announces the John H. Laragh Research Award Recipient for 2025: Dr. Greg Hundemer

Dr. Greg Hundemer

Dr. Greg Hundemer is a staff nephrologist at the Ottawa Hospital, an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and the School of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Ottawa, and a Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He received his MD from Vanderbilt University and his MPH from Johns Hopkins University. He completed internal medicine residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital and nephrology fellowship training at the Brigham & Women's Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital Harvard Combined Program. His clinical and research interests focus on aldosterone-mediated hypertension and vascular disease. Specifically, his work has focused on improving treatment algorithms for primary aldosteronism and the impact of subclinical forms of aldosterone excess on cardiovascular and kidney health. He currently has a total of 117 peer-reviewed publications, including 66 of which he is first or last author on. His research has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, National Institutes of Health, Kidney Foundation of Canada, and the Lorna Jocelyn Wood Chair in Kidney Research. He also serves as Co-Chair for the Hypertension Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee.

About the Award

The John H. Laragh Research Award of the American Journal of Hypertension will be bestowed annually to outstanding investigators in the field of hypertension who are under 45 years of age at the time of the decision to award the prize.  Starting with the 2026 award, we will offer two awards: one for achievements in basic science and one for achievements in clinical science. Investigators involved in basic, clinical, translational, epidemiology, population science, or health systems research related to hypertension are welcome to apply.

Each award winner will have had an outstanding research output with a significant impact on the field and will be judged by the American Journal of Hypertension editors.

 Each award will consist of a plaque and a cash honorarium of USD 10,000.

 On receiving notice of their award, the awardees will be invited to submit a manuscript to the American Journal of Hypertension reviewing his or her work, following the instructions to authors for reviews on the journal website.

To apply for the 2026 John H. Laragh Research Award, applicants will submit the below documents online on the Oxford University Press American Journal of Hypertension website. Please register and login as ‘author’ and submit through the John Laragh Research Award type.

Documents to submit:

  • Two to three page letter of application detailing contributions
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Documentation demonstrating age
  • Two letters of support from recognized prominent scientists in the field of hypertension or related research. One of the letters should be from someone who is not at the applicant’s institution.

The deadline for applications is December 31, 2025.
