Abstract
From being a primarily agricultural country 30 years ago South Korea has been transformed into one that is now largely industrial. At first the emphasis was on production, but since the early 1980s interest in industrial health has increased steadily and there is now an Occupational Health and Safety Act, and a Statutory Quality Control Programme to evaluate the performance of industrial hygiene laboratories. The ways in which the present laws and attitudes developed are outlined.
