The inset cover illustration shows an Arabidopsis thaliana seedling right before the onset of winter in the natural population at Rödåsen, north-central Sweden. In this issue, Postma and Ågren demonstrate that seed dormancy affects trait expression and fitness components across the life cycle of A. thaliana at this site. They argue that among-year variation in these effects should be considered when predicting the consequences of climatic change for population growth and evolution.
