The inset cover illustration shows the leaf venation patterns of ferns, such as the epiphyte Phlebodium aureum, which possess free vein endings. These often lead on the lower leaf surface to the sporangia-producing placenta, but on the upper surface, they lead to hydathodes which release water droplets at night. In this issue, Mehltreter et al. study the possible physiological and ecological functions of these hydathodes [see this issue, pp. 331–344].
