I am deeply grateful to all those who engaged with and supported the production of this work in various ways over the last several years. There are so many to mention in that respect that I am sure I will miss some names out here (apologies to all those). To name just a few, for discussions that were valued in their own right and that helped me shape the work: thank you to Joseph Masco, Daniel Deudney, Debbie Lisle, Simon Dalby, Jutta Weldes, Rens van Munster, Casper Sylvest, Tim Edmunds, and Claudia Aradau.
Rens van Munster and Casper Sylvest also graciously allowed me to participate in their workshop and edited project on The Politics of Globality since 1945. Many of the conversations with those mentioned above began from that workshop in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2014. This book, hopefully, adds something new and distinctive to the broader theme of ‘assembling the planet’ that was opened up in so many interesting ways by that project. I learned so much from follow-up conversations too, especially with Joseph Masco. That relative both to the broad theme of ‘planetary crisis’, as set out in such a compelling way by his work and a key point of inspiration for this project in turn; and finer points and guidance, for which I am equally grateful, such as alerting me to the significance and relevance of, for example, work such as John von Neumann’s ‘Can We Survive Technology?’ as discussed in Chapter 5.
