The idea of putting together a brief and clear, but comprehensive, Handbook, covering the Jewish literature written in Late Antiquity, arose in the course of a conversation between the three of us at the excellent conference held at the British Academy on 10–12 March 2008, on ‘Rabbinic Texts and the History of Late-Roman Palestine’, convened by Martin Goodman and Philip Alexander. Our greatest debt is to Martin Goodman for proposing to the Academy that this book should be published as a supplement to that containing the papers from the conference; but we are also indebted to him for much advice, comment and assistance since.
We would also like to thank a number of colleagues who have provided assistance with all or part of the work: Philip Alexander, who has offered extensive and invaluable comments on behalf of the Academy, as well as generously contributing a Foreword, Gideon Bohak, Ra’anan Boustan, Yaacov Deutsch, Yachin Epstein, Uzi Fuchs, Amos Geula, Leeor Gottlieb, Eden Hacohen, Yuval Harari, Tamar Kadari, Reuven Kipperwasser, Myron Lerner, Neil McLynn, Paul Mandel, Chaim Milikowsky, Noam Mizrahi, Hillel Newman, Vered Noam, Tessa Rajak, Michael Rand, Alison Salvesen, Michael Segal, Abraham Shammah, Avraham Walfish and Joanna Weinberg.
