Which ISA journal is the best home for your research?

Reach a global audience of scholars and policymakers by publishing your work in one of the seven International Studies Association journals published by Oxford University Press.

An Interview with the Editors

Hear from some of the ISA Journals' Editors as they talk about the benefits of publishing in the journals, and what they most enjoy about being editors.

Does your research have a broad scope and is relevant to a general international studies audience?

ISQ cover2International Studies Quarterly (ISQ) articles address important global phenomena relevant to a general international studies audience. Articles published in ISQ engage in some meaningful way with political, economic, social, or cultural processes that cross the borders of states. They provide answers to explanatory puzzles, present original research, explore topics in international theory, or otherwise intervene in disciplinary debates.

Do you want to publish your theoretical and/or methodological approach in a gold open access journal?

isagsq_CoverGlobal Studies Quarterly (GSQ) is fully open access. Articles published in GSQ offer significant theoretical, epistemological, empirical or normative contribution to the field. The journal is open to all theoretical and methodological approaches to questions of international politics, or the intersection of global politics with economy, society or culture. GSQ actively encourages and administers submissions from scholars and regions that are often underrepresented in academic journals.

Is your submission an analytical essay or a book review?

ISR cover2International Studies Review (ISR) publishes review essays and book reviews. Analytical Essays integrate scholarship, clarify debates, provide new perspectives on research, identify new directions for the field, and present insights into scholarship in various parts of the world. Review Essays are fully peer-reviewed analyses of two or more recently published books, while Book Reviews focus on books published within the past year that contribute conceptually and empirically to international studies.

Does your submission relate to pedagogy, policy analysis, or practice?

ISP cover2International Studies Perspectives (ISP) publishes three types of articles. Pedagogy articles present and analyze innovative teaching practices in the field of international studies in colleges and universities from around the world. Policy articles address current or recent policy debates – broadly conceived – highlighting the degree to which these debates are or ought to be informed by existing scholarly literature and contemporary research. Practice articles offer insights into current trends in international studies in the academic and practitioner communities.

Does your article focus on understanding foreign policy decisions, actions or outcomes?

FPA cover2Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA) publishes papers aimed at understanding foreign policy decisions, processes, actions, or outcomes. These can be motivated by foreign policy or international relations (IR) theories, examine a wide range of cases and data or particular cases of foreign policy processes or outcomes, and employ a diverse set of empirical methods. FPA provides an open forum for research publication that enhances the communication of concepts and ideas across theoretical, methodological, geographical and disciplinary boundaries.

Does your article explore the international realm in a way that troubles conventional approaches within international relations?

IPS cover2International Political Sociology (IPS) is interested in challenges that arise from contemporary transformations of social, political, and global orders, especially given that many approaches to international relations reproduce statist forms that marginalize and silence multiple social processes. It is committed to theoretical innovation, the decentering of dominant modes of knowledge production and novel approaches to empirical research. It encourages transdisciplinary research that takes international relations in new directions, and is particularly interested in collaborations between sociologists, international relations specialists, sociopolitical theorists, human geographers, legal theorists, and anthropologists.

Does your submission focus on global security?

JOGSS cover2The Journal of Global Security Studies (JoGSS) aims to publish cutting-edge research which offers a significant, rigorous and original contribution to our understanding of global security and global aspects of debates in security studies. The journal welcomes a variety of methodological, epistemological, theoretical, normative, and empirical approaches to the study of traditional and non-traditional security issues.

Do you have a proposal for a special issue?

International Studies Quarterly, Foreign Policy Analysis, Journal of Global Security Studies, and Global Studies Quarterly accept proposals for special issues.

Do you want to enjoy the benefits of publishing in journals supported by a distinguished society?

The International Studies Association (ISA) has more than 7,000 members that span the globe – comprising academics, practitioners, policy experts, private sector workers and independent researchers, among others. Members receive free access to the ISA journals with their membership.

All of the ISA journals offer open access publishing options, and Global Studies Quarterly is fully open access. The ISA is interested in increasing readership and authorship among scholars who are typically underrepresented in academic journals. Article processing charges (APCs) from scholars based in the Global South may be waived. For more information on waivers, visit the Oxford Journals open access charges page.
