COVER: Mitochondria are actively recruited to sites of high-energy demand in cells. The subcellular ATP/ADP ratio in the perinuclear cell body (CB) compartment and leading-edge pseudopod (PD) compartment is modulated by local mitochondrial density. (A) AMPK-dependent mitochondrial recruitment to PDs increases local ATP/ADP ratios in PDs and supports cell migration. (B) We hypothesize local protein redox status (red = reduced thiol, OX = oxidized thiol) is modulated by mitochondrial recruitment to subcellular sites, introducing an additional level of redox-dependent control over local signaling processes.
