Special Issue: Plant Eco-physiological Responses and Adaptations in the Anthropocene: from Genes to Ecosystems

The impacts of human-induced global environmental change that characterize the Anthropocene with global climate, environment pollution, biological invasion and land use changes. Human-induced environmental changes are dramatically changing plant growth, survival, biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality. For example, extreme climate event (e.g., drought, flood, heat) has been observed in deriving the increasing vegetation mortality in many terrestrial ecosystems. In addition, pollution from nitrogen deposition, heavy metal, haze and night light pose a serious threat to biodiversity and ecosystem health. Elucidating the mechanisms of plant adaptive responses to global change in molecules, physiology, and ecology are crucial in plant defending stress. Still, it is unclear on what are plant adaptive strategies from genes to ecosystems to biotic and abiotic stress under anthropogenic environmental changes. This special issue aims to give an overview of the eco-physiologcial mechanisms from molecular to ecosystem behind plants' responses to human-driven environmental changes, and to provide selected contributions on advances in conservation and restoration in grassland, agriculture and forest ecosystems.

Topics

  • Mechanisms of plant adaptations to biotic and abiotic stress (e.g., nitrogen deposition, elevated temperature, drought, soil acidification, interspecific competition, biological invasion);

  • Physiological responses and resilience of plants to climate change and environmental pollution (e.g., haze pollution, ozone pollution, heavy metal pollution);

  • Plant nutrient absorption and C-N-P stoichiometric traits under stress environments;

  • Responses in the multifunctionality of forest ecosystems to climate change.

  • Molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying climate-driven vegetation mortality.
