Open research

Open research maximises reproducibility and transparency, removes barriers to access, and accelerates progress towards new research outcomes.

The availability of materials such as data, methods, code, and software supports collaboration as well as communication, delivers more robust research, and underpins research integrity. Open research is fundamental to increasing trust in research literature.

Open research and open access (OA) publishing are among the ways we fulfil our mission to further excellence in research, scholarship, and education as part of Oxford University. We believe the best way to do this is through cooperative action in the scholarly community, working with authors, society publishing partners, institutions, and funders, to move towards an open world.

Wherever possible for our publications and those of our society partners, we initiate and support the transition to open access and open research practices, while recognizing that different subject areas and research outputs have different requirements. Our OA publications are subject to the same rigorous peer review and publication ethics processes as all the research we publish.

Engaging with the scholarly community

Oxford University Press (OUP) engages with the scholarly community to further the development of open research practices. OUP supports the following organizations and initiatives:

Publishing open access with OUP

OUP publishes rigorously peer-reviewed, world-leading, trusted open access research, upholding the highest standards of publication ethics and integrity. Our OA publishing is a key part of how we deliver on our mission to achieve the widest possible dissemination of high-quality research.

Our approach to OA, like all our publishing, is transparent, flexible, inclusive, and centred on working towards a sustainable future.

Funder policies and open access

Increasingly, funding bodies are implementing OA policies and mandates for their researchers. To ensure compliance, authors should check their funder’s publication requirements before submitting their research to a journal.

OUP has Read & Publish agreements in place with institutions and library consortia worldwide – with more in discussion. Find out if you qualify for OA funding through one of these Read & Publish agreements.

Research data

The availability of research data, code, software, and other underlying research materials which are accessible, standardised, interoperable, and reusable are building blocks for transparency and reproducibility of research.  As a department of the University of Oxford, it is central to OUP’s educational and scholarly mission to encourage and support the sharing of research materials to meet the needs of research communities globally.   Our journal data availability policies have been adopted by over 400 of our journals.
