Participating initiatives
Oxford University Press (OUP) participates in several Low and Middle Income Country initiatives to serve the needs of the global research community, advance innovation, and help meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Research4Life
Research4Life encompasses five public-private partnerships providing institutions in Low and Middle Income Countries with free or low-cost online access to critical scientific and social science research: AGORA (Research in Agriculture), ARDI (Research for Development and Innovation), GOALI (Research for Global Justice), HINARI (Research for Health), and OARE (Research in the Environment). Since 2002, these programs have enabled researchers at more than 10,000 institutions in 125 lower and middle–income countries, areas, and territories to gain online access to over 140,000 leading academic and professional peer-reviewed journals and books.
GOALI (Research for Global Justice), a partnership of the International Labour Organization with publishers and university law libraries, provides eligible institutions with free or low-cost online access to law journals, databases, and training materials. The program aims to improve the quality of legal research, education, and training; strengthen legal frameworks and institutions; and further the rule of law in Low and Middle Income Countries. HINARI (Research for Health) was established by the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and major publishers to give researchers working in Low and Middle Income Countries access to free or very low cost online biomedical and health content. This organization opens the digital door to journals, e-books and other content from 150 publisher partners and 170 publishers. Resources | Register
AGORA (Research in Agriculture), set up by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) with major publishers, enables researchers in more than 115 countries to retrieve research in the fields of food, agriculture, environmental science, and related social sciences from up to 15,500 journals and 48,000 books. OARE (Research in the Environment) is coordinated by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Yale University, and leading science and technology publishers to broaden access to one of the world’s largest collections of environmental science research. The initiative makes up to 11,500 scientific journals; 27,000 e-books; 40 databases; and other information resources available to researchers in 118 countries. Resources | Register
ARDI (Research for Development and Innovation) is coordinated by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and publishing industry partners to increase the availability of scientific and technical information about innovation. Seeking to spur solutions to technical challenges in Low and Middle Income Countries, ARDI is providing researchers in 120 countries and territories with access to up to 30,000 journals and books from over 100 publishers. Electronic Information for Libraries
Electronic Information for Libraries (EIFL) is a not-for-profit organization that works with libraries to help people access and use information for education, learning, research, and sustainable community in developing and transitional economies in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Latin America. Founded by COAR (Confederation of Open Access Repositories) and Copyright for Creativity, EIFL has relationships with a wide range of organizations, including leading governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as libraries and library consortia representing more than 3,000 libraries in 40 countries. Its four programs (Licensing, Copyright and Libraries, Open Access, and Public Library Innovation) focus on helping to build capacity, advocating for access, encouraging knowledge sharing, and initiating pilot projects.
