100 years
The American Journal of Epidemiology (AJE) was founded in 1920, with the first issue published in January 1921. In the past 100 years, the Journal has gone through many changes, including changes in frequency of publication and even name (from American Journal of Hygiene to American Journal of Epidemiology in 1965). Through it all, one thing that has remained the same is our dedication to publishing timely, relevant, and impactful research on epidemiology and public health. In the coming year (and beyond!), the AJE will solidify its mission statement for the future and make updates to provide a better user experience and launch us into the next era.
As William Welch noted in his introduction to the first issue of the Journal, “The history of public health administration and of preventive medicine exemplifies perhaps more strikingly than any other field the dependence of successful practice upon accurate knowledge.” We at the AJE are proud to have assisted in the publication and dissemination of that knowledge, and we are looking forward to the next 100 years. Please join us in our celebration!

Moving into the next 100 years together
As part of our move into the next 100 years of the AJE, we have streamlined our instructions to authors (ITA)! We had already significantly reduced the initial submission guidelines to make the process as simple as possible. Now we have reorganized and revamped the rest of the ITA to make it even easier to find answers to your questions (although you can always contact the editorial office).
