Instructions for AJHP Residents Edition Authors/Reviewers

Authors

Authors are invited to submit manuscripts that describe the results of research projects or rigorous quality improvement programs that were undertaken while they were residents. All manuscripts should be submitted through AJHP's online manuscript submission system. Authors should use this system to submit and track their new manuscripts.

At the time of submission, authors must indicate whether their manuscript should be considered for the Residents Edition, AJHP's regular pages, or either.

Manuscripts are subject to review by qualified external peer reviewers, as well as by the editors. Accepted materials become the permanent and sole property of ASHP and may not be published elsewhere without written permission from both the author and ASHP.

The text of AJHP Residents Edition manuscripts (not including the abstract, author biography, and reference list) should be limited to 3,500 words. In addition, up to 3 pages of tables or figures (estimated final size in the online PDF) are allowed. For every page of the tables/figures allowance not used, 600 words may be added to the manuscript text.

The editors reserve the right to revise all manuscripts submitted, if necessary. The publisher assumes no responsibility for the statements and opinions advanced by contributors to AJHP Residents Edition.

Authors who have questions about submitting manuscripts to AJHP Residents Edition or AJHP should contact the Journal's editorial staff at 301-664-8601 or [email protected].

For guidance on style, authors should consult the Manuscript Submission Checklist, the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors “Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals”, and recent issues of AJHP.

All manuscripts published in AJHP Residents Edition should include a photo and brief biographical sketch of the resident author(s). Authors are also encouraged to submit a brief video to supplement the article. Submission of a video is highly encouraged, but it is not required for manuscript acceptance.

Videos, author photos, and biographical information should be submitted with revised manuscripts; it is not necessary to provide this material at the time of original manuscript submission. This material is separate from the routine author identification that is included with all original and revised manuscripts.

Authors are permitted to submit an article published in AJHP Residents Edition to PubMed Central on the following conditions:

  1. Permission is granted only for manuscripts that arise from direct funding from a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant or cooperative agreement, the NIH Intramural Program, or an NIH employee; or direct funding from any other not-for-profit organization that requires authors to submit articles on funded research to a publically available, not-for-profit noninstitutional repository (e.g., PubMed Central, Europe PubMed Central).
  2. Permission is granted to post only the manuscript that was submitted and accepted for publication but not the final, edited, formatted, and published article. Authors must ensure that the posted content includes a link to the published article on AJHP's website in order to provide access to the final version, corrections and relevant letters (if any), and article-related features and supplemental content available only via the AJHP website.
  3. Authors should stipulate that PubMed Central may release the manuscript for public access one year after publication in AJHP. Authors should acknowledge the published source of the material.
  4. Articles published in AJHP are protected by copyright at the time of publication and thereafter. This public access policy does not include permission to use the AJHP logo and trademarks. The article of record on AJHP's website is the final published version; ASHP assumes no responsibility for earlier versions of articles, as substantive changes and/or corrections can occur after article acceptance. Authors may contact the editorial office with questions about this policy.

Availability of Data and Materials

Where ethically feasible, AJHP strongly encourages authors to make all data and software code on which the conclusions of the paper rely available to readers. Authors are required to include a Data Availability Statement in their article.

We suggest that data be presented in the main manuscript or additional supporting files, or deposited in a public repository whenever possible. Information on general repositories for all data types, and a list of recommended repositories by subject area, is available on OUP's Research data page

Data Availability Statement

The inclusion of a Data Availability Statement is a requirement for articles published in AJHP. Data Availability Statements provide a standardized format for readers to understand the availability of data underlying the research results described in the article. The statement may refer to original data generated in the course of the study or to third-party data analyzed in the article. The statement should describe and provide means of access, where possible, by linking to the data or providing the required unique identifier.

The Data Availability Statement should be included in the endmatter of your article under the heading “Data Availability”.

Sample Data Availability Statements are as follows:

  • When all data are incorporated into the article and its online supplementary material:
    • Recommended statement: The data underlying this article are available in the article and its online supplementary material.
  • When data are available on request:
    • Recommended statement: The data underlying this article will be shared on reasonable request to the corresponding author.
  • When data cannot be shared for ethical/privacy reasons:
    • Recommended statement: The data underlying this article cannot be shared publicly due to [describe why the data cannot be shared, e.g. for the privacy of individuals that participated in the study].
  • When there are no new data associated with the article:
    • Recommended statement: No new data were generated or analyzed in support of this research/work.

More information on Data Availability Statements can be found on OUP's Research data page.

Data Citation

AJHP supports the Force 11 Data Citation Principles and requires that all publicly available datasets be fully referenced in the reference list with an accession number or unique identifier such as a digital object identifier (DOI). Data citations should include the minimum information recommended by DataCite:

[dataset]* Authors, Year, Title, Publisher (repository or archive name), Identifier

*The inclusion of the [dataset] tag at the beginning of the citation helps us to correctly identify and tag the citation. This tag will be removed from the citation published in the reference list.
