About the authors

About the Authors of the 11th Edition

Stacy L. Christiansen, MA, co-chair of the AMA Manual of Style committee and managing editor of JAMA, has worked in medical publishing for more than 20 years. She has taught in the University of Chicago Medical Writing and Editing Program and is an active member of both the Council of Science Editors (including as a faculty member for the Short Course for Manuscript Editors) and the American Medical Writers Association. She was a coauthor of the 10th edition of the AMA Manual of Style and is the resident tweeter for the manual.

Cheryl Iverson, MA, co-chair of the AMA Manual of Style committee, worked for more than 40 years at the JAMA Network, most recently as managing editor of the JAMA Network journals. She has been active in the Council of Science Editors, taught medical editing in the University of Chicago Publishing Program, and taught Writing for Publication in a Scientific Journal as part of the New England Epidemiology Summer Program. She served on the editorial board of the Council of Science Editor’s Science Editor and also chaired the committees that prepared the 8th, 9th, and 10th editions of the AMA Manual of Style.

Annette Flanagin, RN, MA, is executive managing editor and vice president, Editorial Operations, JAMA and the JAMA Network. She has been a journal editor for more than 30 years. She is a past president of the Council of Science Editors, Executive Director of the International Congress on Peer Review and Scientific Publication, and a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She participates in research, lectures, and publishes articles on issues related to scientific publication for authors, editors, and publishers. Annette was also a coauthor of the 9th and 10th editions of the AMA Manual of Style.

Edward H. Livingston, MD, was deputy editor, Clinical Reviews and Education, for JAMA and the JAMA Network. He worked in editorial positions with JAMA Network journals for more than 15 years. He has served as a professor of surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles, and an adjunct professor of surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago. He also served as professor and chairman of GI and endocrine surgery at UTSW School of Medicine and professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Texas Arlington.

Lauren Fischer, BA, BS, served as deputy managing editor for the JAMA Network specialty journals and worked in editorial positions there for 20 years. She has been a member of the Council of Science Editors and authored an article about corrections for Science Editor.

Connie Manno, ELS, is freelance manuscript editing director for the JAMA Network and has held editorial positions there for more than 20 years.

Brenda Gregoline, ELS, is managing editor of the JAMA Network specialty journals. She is a member of the Society for Scholarly Publishing and has worked in scientific publishing for more than 20 years. She was the creator of AMA Style Insider (the blog for the AMA Manual of Style).

Tracy Frey, BA, is deputy managing editor of the JAMA Network specialty journals and has held editorial positions there for more than 15 years. She is a member of the Council of Science Editors.

Phil B. Fontanarosa, MD, MBA, is the executive editor of JAMA. He has been an editor at JAMA since 1993 and served as interim editor in chief in 1999 and 2021. He is board certified in emergency medicine, received an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, and is an adjunct professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. He was also a coauthor of the 9th and 10th editions of the AMA Manual of Style.

Roxanne K. Young, ELS, was director of the Department of Medical Humanities of JAMA and was an editor with JAMA for 30 years. She edited JAMA’s A Piece of My Mind column and 2 collections of the essays. She also edited 3 collections of The Art of JAMA. She was a coauthor of the 8th, 9th, and 10th editions of the AMA Manual of Style.
