About the Journal

Founded in 1960, the British Journal of Aesthetics is highly regarded as an international forum for debate in philosophical aesthetics and the philosophy of art. The Journal is published to promote the study and discussion of philosophical questions about aesthetic experience and the arts.

Appearing quarterly - in January, April, July, and October - it publishes lively and thoughtful articles on a broad range of topics from the nature of aesthetic judgement and the principles of art criticism to foundational issues concerning the visual arts, literature, music, dance, film, and architecture.

A substantial reviews section offers searching analyses of major new work in the field.

Editorial Statement

The year 2020 marks the beginning of a new decade and the 60th anniversary of the British Journal of Aesthetics; also, this year marks the beginning of our tenure as editors of the journal. There is no doubt that the high-quality content that the journal has been publishing for six decades has shaped the thought of many aestheticians over these years. As new editors, our main goal is to honour this legacy and carry this tradition into the future.

Over these 60 years many things have changed and new challenges have arisen. We now know that women and members of minority groups are under-represented in philosophy journals; we also live in a more global and interconnected academic world and the content, contributors and readership of this journal should reflect this diversity.  As editors, we will address these challenges. We will facilitate the publication of papers by women and minorities so as fairly to reflect the aesthetics community. We will look to continue efforts to broaden the scope of the journal so as to connect aesthetics with other areas of philosophy, to cover issues that are currently discussed in arts or art-related fields, and to discuss issues of concern to under-represented groups.

Related to some of the goals mentioned above, a new direction for the journal in 2020 will be the inclusion of reviews of films, exhibitions and performances with a marked philosophical content. We hope that this type of content will attract interest from those working in cognate academic areas and those with a non-professional interest in aesthetics. In addition, we hope this material could be used as part of aesthetics classes. These reviews will be published both in each new issue of the journal and in the OUP blog.

Currently, the BJA does not have any independent presence in social media and we believe this is important to its future success. For this reason, starting in January 2020, the journal will have its own Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts to promote the content of the journal (old and new), to connect with media outlets and arts-related publications, and to publicise specific messages among international philosophical associations. We hope aestheticians will not only follow these but help us in distributing them far and wide.

It goes without saying that it will be a great honour for us, members of the new editorial team, to be responsible for a journal that is widely read and influential in our discipline. Being an editor provides a privileged perspective over how the discipline is evolving and the possibility to play an active role in that evolution. As active members of the community, we have benefited from the excellent work done by previous editors and now, as current editors, we want to continue this project and keep the mission of the journal alive and growing.
