Abstract

There are many solid books on American race relations written mostly by lawyers and historians. This book builds on these works but it differs from them in six important and interrelated ways. (1) It comprehensively covers not just one slice but all of the major realms of society: economics, education, justice, medicine, and housing. (2) It includes significant insights from social psychology, such as understanding implicit prejudice and the importance of intergroup contact - topics rarely found in other race relations books. (3) It employs a three-level analysis - individual, interpersonal, and structural - with emphasis on structural norms and discrimination as well as prejudice. (4) It offers a new and unique analysis and plan for racial reparations. (5) For readers who wish to dive deeper into the study of American race relations, key books are recommended for each chapter as well as a bibliography of more than 700 references. (6) Lastly, in comments and sidebars, there is a personal emphasis that traces the author’s more than seven decades of research in American race relations and direct participation in many critical race relations events since 1952.
