BERNARD BAVANT
CNRS (UMR 7044, Strasbourg)
Bernard Bavant was born in Lyons in 1950. He was a pupil at the École normale superiéure (1971–5), a member of the French School of Rome (1977–80) and research member of the CRNS since 1980. He studied the history and archaeology of the early Byzantine period (fifth–seventh centuries AD), specializing in the Balkans and Syria. He has been a member of the excavation team at Caričin Grad since 1978 and from 1996 has been the Director of this Graeco-Serbian programme. He has also excavated at Déhès in northern Syria. He contributed to the volume Caričin Grad II: le quartier sud-ouest de la Ville Haute (1990) Belgrade/Rome.
MARK J. BEECH
Abu Dhabi Islands Authority for Cultural Heritage
Dr Mark J. Beech is Head of the Cultural Landscapes Division at the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, based in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. His current research interests include the archaeology of Western Asia, with a particular focus on the Arabian Gulf. He has undertaken archaeological research in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Jordan, Kuwait, pakistan, the UK, and the United Arab Emirates. Recent publications include: ‘In the land of the Ichthyophagi’ (2004) BAR International Series S1217; ‘Abu Dhabi 8 million years ago—late Miocene fossils from the Western Region’ (2005) ADIAS.
