The School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) is steadfast in advancing the SSWAA National School Social Work Practice Model 2.0 (hereafter Practice Model), a framework grounded in social justice, equity, and the well-being of all students and families. As a national membership-driven organization, we recognize the responsibility to lead efforts that address systemic inequities, dismantle barriers, and promote inclusivity within educational systems. SSWAA is dedicated to fostering a shared understanding of the Practice Model’s objectives and strategies among school social workers, educators, policymakers, and families. By offering resources and professional development, we aim to equip practitioners with the tools they need to implement the model successfully. Ongoing dialogue and engagement are critical to this process, allowing continuous refinement and collaboration. Through forums, webinars, and opportunities for peer connection, we support school social workers in navigating the complexities of their roles and addressing challenges to promote collective progress.
As we champion this work, we also acknowledge the importance of addressing critiques with empathy, respect, and humility. Constructive discourse is essential for growth, but it must be approached in ways that prioritize the voices and perspectives of groups who have long experienced marginalization and silencing. SSWAA is committed to creating spaces where these voices are heard and integrated into the decision-making process, ensuring that our actions are inclusive and just.
As readers consider the issues raised in this issue of Children & Schools, SSWAA is working to address these challenges and drive progress. Here is what SSWAA is doing in 2025–2026 to support the Practice Model:
Investing in the dissemination of the updated Practice Model
Publication of a three-volume book series on implementing the model
Developing briefs and talking points for members to explain the application of the Practice Model to their position (e.g., special education school social worker, general education school social worker)
Broadening opportunities for professional activities (leadership, research, advocacy) highlighted in the Practice Model through the expansion of committees and task forces
Establishing member-led committees to support the implementation of the Practice Model such as conducting practice research, supporting state associations and members in influencing policy at the state level, and updating standards for student well-being
Directly linking professional development webinars and conference sessions to the Practice Model and making that connection visible in both advertisements about the session and in the presentation itself
The momentum behind the National School Social Work Practice Model 2.0 reflects the widespread commitment within the field for transformative change. School social work has always had foundational constructs in social justice, and we remain committed to shaping a future where justice and equity remain foundational to the work. Together, with empathy, collaboration, and unwavering dedication, we aim to inspire the next generation of school social workers, ensuring that they are equipped to carry this vision forward and uphold the values of our profession, encouraging school social workers to adopt a long-term, strategic perspective to persist in the face of resistance and challenges.
