Editor-in-Chief
Nico started his career in 1985 at the Thorax Center, Department of Cardiology, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, Netherlands, in the cath lab with some of the pioneers in interventional cardiology Prof’s Patrick Serruys and Pim de Feyter. In 1993 he joined the Experimental and Clinical Information Processing (KEI) division of the Thorax Center, one of the pioneer groups in digital cardiology, which he currently heads. At the KEI he became involved in the early development of three-dimensional echocardiography, resulting in a thesis - "Quantitative 3D echocardiography of the heart and coronary arteries" under the promotership of Prof. Jos Roelandt in 1998. The current focus areas of the KEI include the recording and analysis of general cardiology data, bedside patient monitoring, cardiovascular imaging, virtual reality applications, telecardiology, automated process automation, wearables, and other digital health topics.
Nico has served in many different roles within the ESC over the past 20 years, including chair of the ESC Working Group on eCardiology, Nucleus Committee Member of the Digital Health Committee, former Editor-in-Chief of the Digital Health Portal including the Digital Health Virtual Journal, and is currently the Editor-in-Chief of European Heart Journal - Digital Health.
