Environmental Risk Assessment of PFAS

First published: 1 May 2019

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are a universe of diverse substances that have been used in a wide array of industrial and consumer products including fire-fighting foams, anti-stain products for carpet and upholstery and heat-resistant, nonstick cookware. Many PFAS substances can be persistent in the environment and thus found in biota and the environment. Over 3,000 PFAS substances are on regulatory registration lists. Many jurisdictions have recognized this increasing concern, and many have developed criteria for various media that vary in the interpretation of the available data. SETAC is holding a focused topic meeting to gather the latest science in chemistry, environmental fate, ecotoxicity, human health effects and risk characterization and to address how to best interpret these data and formulate a roadmap towards improving our understanding of PFAS risks. This virtual issue pulls together SETAC published research on PFAS including the paper that established the use of the acronym PFAS.

Weight-of-Evidence in Environmental Risk Assessment Virtual Issue

First published: 13 August 2018

The weight-of-evidence (WOE) framework represents the process of assembling, weighing, and evaluating information to come to a scientifically defensible conclusion. SETAC Technical Issue Paper (TIP) on Weight-of-Evidence in Environmental Risk Assessment outlines the process and provides a list of resources that deliver valuable insight on WoE as it pertains to environmental risk assessment. In this virtual issue, we compile several articles from our journals that address the WOE framework in environmental risk assessment to complement the TIP.
