What is peer review?

Peer review is the foundation of scientific publishing. When you are asked to review a manuscript that has been submitted for publication, your expertise is being acknowledged and your opinion is being valued. As a service to our authors, we try to provide prompt, constructive feedback to help authors improve their manuscript before publication, or we may find that the manuscript would be more suitable for another journal. We rely on our reviewers to share their experience and expertise so that we can publish the highest quality research and reviews.

Who can become a reviewer?

If you have published peer-reviewed articles and are active in the field and can objectively evaluate the quality and rigor of research, we want you! The editors of the Journal of Analytical Toxicology are looking for peer reviewers...

  • with academic credentials

  • who are active in the field of toxicology research

  • who can provide constructive criticism to authors

  • that have adequate years of forensic, clinical, and/or analytical toxicology experience

Benefits of reviewing for the Journal of Analytical Toxicology

Becoming involved in the peer review process for a scientific journal can be a highly rewarding experience in and of itself. Doing your part to protect the integrity of published scientific literature, at a time when the credibility of science is being increasingly challenged, is more important than ever. That said, there are several benefits specific to reviewing for the Journal of Analytical Toxicology:

  • Develop your professional service portfolio.

  • If you are interested in publishing your own research in the journals, get a first-hand look at the quality of research that is required.

  • Preview cutting edge scientific work that helps you stay atop your field.

The peer review process

All manuscripts submitted to the Journal are reviewed by the Editor. Those outside the scope of the Journal are rejected without peer review; all other manuscripts are sent to independent experts for anonymous peer review. The reviewers make an independent scientific assessment and a recommendation to the Editor. The Editor considers the manuscript and the reviewers’ comments before making the decision to accept, accept pending revision, or reject a manuscript. Acceptance pending revision does not guarantee eventual acceptance.
