JCMC is one of the oldest web-based Internet Studies journals in existence, having been published continuously since June 1995. The journal was started by Margaret McLaughlin and Sheizaf Rafaeli in response to the growth of CMC scholarship in the early- to mid-1990s and has since grown to become one of the leading publications in the field. 
    
JCMC has an Impact Factor of 5.4 and is ranked 6/227 in the SSCI Communications category (2024).
