Why publish in the Journal of Mammalogy?

  • We are a society owned journal, with the backing and global reach of a vast community of mammal experts. Become a member of ASM and receive a variety of benefits, including a discounted fee for publishing open access.

  • We are published by Oxford University Press, a not-for-profit organization, and publication fees help support funding opportunities for students and early-career researchers, conferences, and other initiatives organized by the ASM.

  • We are committed to equitable and ethical publishing and follow the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.

  • As the flagship journal of ASM for over 100 years, the Journal of Mammalogy publishes high-quality articles that make an impact in mammal research.

Simple submission

Beginning with manuscripts submitted in October 2023, the Journal of Mammalogy will be format-neutral at initial submission, which means that manuscripts do not need to be formatted according to specific journal guidelines to be considered for review. This allows for a simpler submission process without tedious formatting.

Community driven

ASM Members receive significant discounts on page charges, color print charges, and open-access fees for publishing in the Journal of Mammalogy. Members without institutional or grant funds can apply for a hardship publishing grant from the Society.

Dedicated to mammal research

The Journal of Mammalogy has over 100 years of experience in publishing mammal research. The journal consistently has the highest impact factor of all journals that publish original research about mammals and scores in the top quartile of publications in zoology and related fields.

Open access option

The Journal of Mammalogy offers the option of publishing under either a standard license or an open access license. Learn more about open access licenses available at OUP.

ASM Members are eligible for a 25% discount on open access charges (APCs).

OUP has a growing number of Read and Publish agreements with institutions and consortia that provide funding for OA publishing. This means that authors from participating institutions can publish OA, and the institution will pay the APC. Find out if your institution is participating in a Read and Publish agreement.
