About the Journal
Parliamentary Affairs is a leading, peer-reviewed journal covering all aspects of representation and politics connected to the institution of parliament. The journal is published in partnership with the Hansard Society, created to promote parliamentary democracy throughout the world.
Established in 1947, Parliamentary Affairs has a distinguished record of linking the theory and conduct of parliament and politics. The journal offers rigorous and readable examinations of a wide international range of parliaments and political processes, which are both of academic interest and policy relevance. Parliamentary Affairs aims to publish methodologically diverse and comparative research, and welcomes innovative and stimulating submissions, from authors across the globe, which engage with Parliamentary Affairs' core themes of parliamentary representation and democracy.
Aims and Scope
Parliamentary Affairs aims to publish research which covers all aspects of representation and politics connected to the institution of parliament. In no particular order of preference, we welcome submissions on the following areas:
- Parliament, parliamentary democracy, processes and procedures – in other words, parliamentary affairs widely defined
- Democracy, democratic practices and challenges
- Political parties and party systems
- Electoral politics, such as electoral systems, public opinion and voting behaviour
- Government and policy
The history of Parliamentary Affairs has been intimately connected with the study of British politics. We wish to encourage the best of political studies writing and research on the continually evolving political landscape of the UK. We also have a long history of publishing and encouraging work on these issues worldwide. We therefore welcome comparative work looking at aspects of the representative and parliamentary process across countries. We also publish single country studies, and these are welcome particularly where they highlight issues of wider concern to the parliamentary and political studies communities worldwide.
We have no methodological preference in what we publish. Our approach is simply to publish methodologically sound research, whether that be qualitative or quantitative. We are also open to both theoretical and empirical approaches. We will also be happy to receive commentary pieces where academic understandings seek to engage with specific policy issues and make policy recommendations.
