Studying Political Parties as Organizations: Four Perspectives on Denmark's Alternative Party

Abstract
This book represents an attempt to convince organization scholars that political parties constitute interesting and relevant study objects. Organization scholars have always been interested in questions of power and politics, leading many to conduct fascinating analyses of social movements and activist networks, but the detailed study of political parties has for some reason been consistently neglected. To remedy this shortcoming, the book outlines four distinct perspectives on party organization: the classical, the configurational, the comparative and the cultural. While the first three perspectives are well-established within political science, the latter is still in its infancy. I therefore use the literature on organizational culture to highlight how organization scholars might contribute to the body of established party research. To illustrate the value of each of the four perspectives, I apply them to the case of the Danish green party Alternativet, which rose to prominence in late 2013 and later experienced serious setbacks. This case allows me to provide organizational answers to issues and problems that are often framed as strictly political and therefore excluded from consideration by many organization scholars.
