The stink bug complex in Texas soybean is comprised of redbanded, brown, and southern green stink bugs and is an important pest in soybean production. They feed on developing pods and can significantly reduce yield. This research aimed to evaluate the efficacy of selected foliar insecticides, including a new product (A21550CP), for controlling stink bugs in soybeans (variety ‘AG72XF0’) in Texas. The study was conducted at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Beaumont, Texas. Soybean was planted on 13 Jun 2024. Plots were 4 rows, 25 feet long, with 30-inch row spacing, and arranged as a randomized completed block design with 6 treatments and 4 replications. Soybeans were sampled frequently for stink bug presence throughout the growing season. Stink bug populations reached threshold levels on 7 Oct when soybeans were at the R6 stage. Applications were made with a CO2-powered spray rig (30 gpa), using 2-liter plastic bottles. Treatments were as follows: 2 rates of Endigo ZCX, 2 rates of A21550CP (PLINAZOLIN technology SC400), Orthene 97, and untreated check. All A21550CP treatments included the adjuvant Dyne-Amic at 0.25% v:v. Treatments were applied on 9 Oct, and stink bug populations were evaluated 3 (12 Oct), 7 (16 Oct), and 10 (19 Oct) days after treatment (DAT). Insecticide efficacy on the stink bug complex was evaluated by taking 10 sweeps, using a 15-inch sweep net in 1 row of each plot. Contents of the sweep net were identified, and the total number of stink bugs (adults + nymphs) per species was recorded from each plot. Data were analyzed with ANOVA, and means were separated using a Fisher’s protected LSD (P < 0.05).

Redbanded stink bug. At 3 DAT, there were no significant differences between the untreated check and other insecticide treatments in redbanded stink bug (adults + nymphs) pressure (Table 1). However, at 7 and 10 DAT, all treated plots had significantly lower redbanded stink bug (adults + nymphs) pressure when compared with the untreated check.

Stink bug complex. At 3 DAT, all treatments except A21550CP (2.1 oz/acre) had significantly lower stink bug numbers when compared with the untreated check. At 7 and 10 DAT, all treatments had significantly lower soybean stink bug (adults + nymphs) pressure than the untreated check (Table 4). At 7 DAT, A211550CP (2.1 oz/acre) plots had the lowest stink bug complex pressure of all treatments (Table 4). At 10 DAT, both rates (1.6 and 2.1 oz/acre) of A21550CP plots had the lowest stink bug complex pressure of all treatments (Table 4). All foliar treatments appear to be effective at reducing stink bug populations in soybeans. Further research should be conducted to investigate how well these chemistries perform during pod development and pod fill growth stages.1
