Abstract
This chapter covers working with thoughts and identifying cognitive shifts. On the positive side, cognitive shifts keep a person focused on a threat, allowing them to better manage the potentially harmful situation. However, cognitive shifts also can maintain feelings of threat and may actually exacerbate avoidance if the person focuses on the worst possible interpretations or potential outcomes of the situation. The chapter describes several types of cognitive shifts, such as filtering, polarized thinking, overgeneralization, personalization, and shoulds. It highlights the importance of being gentle when addressing cognitive shifts as clients become aware of a shift and move to address it.
