Editor and Reviewer Programmes
Junior Reviewer Programme
The Junior Reviewers for EHJ – Case Reports are generally senior cardiology trainees or fellows with a moderate amount of scientific publication experience. Each junior reviewer is recruited in a competitive process and generally nominated by members of the journal’s editorial board or European Society of Cardiology associations, working groups or young communities.
Junior Reviewers are assigned articles by Associate Editors. Their role is to undertake reviews of the articles which are assigned to them. All articles are also reviewed by a Senior Reviewer with significant experience in the peer review process. Junior Reviewers are provided with feedback on their reviews as part of a training programme. Junior reviewers who successfully review articles over a two-year period are provided with a certificate of competence. At the end of their two-year team having reviewed 30 articles or more and their reviews have been high in quality and timely the Junior Reviewers are provided with a certificate from the European Heart Journal- Case Reports, and some may be invited to become Senior Reviewers or Associate Editors if appropriate and when vacancies occur.
Associate Editor Programme
Our Associate Editor programme recruits senior cardiology fellows and recently qualified consultants/attendings with a history of substantial scientific publication. Each Associate Editor is recruited in a competitive process and is generally nominated by members of the journal’s editorial board or European Society of Cardiology associations or working groups.
Associate Editors work directly with the Editor-in-Chief and are assigned articles for which they handle the peer review process. Associate Editors are responsible for making initial decisions on each article, assigning reviewers, and making final recommendations on manuscripts. The Editor-in-Chief provides feedback to Associate Editors on their performance with an aim of moulding their performance and improving their editing skills.
Junior Editor Programme
Junior Editors are junior trainees who are recruited to assist in reviewing and editing specific aspects of submitted manuscripts. Currently junior editors are assigned to one of three roles:
- Compliance Editors: these editors assess the compliance of accepted manuscripts with the CARE reporting guidelines for case reports. Manuscripts with any areas that are not compliant are returned to authors for modification/correction prior to acceptance;
- Supplementary Material Editors: these editors assess submitted slide-sets of accepted manuscripts to ensure they comply with the journals style guide and provide a useful accompanying resource for articles published by EHJ-CR. Slide-sets which require changes are returned to authors for modification/correction prior to acceptance;
- Podcast Editors: these editors choose interesting articles which have been accepted by the journal and create a short podcast detailing the article and delving in-depth into the background and learning points to assist readers in understanding the relevance of the case to current practice.
At the end of a two-year period, junior editors will, if appropriate, be invited to join the Junior Reviewer or Associate Editor programmes.
