Phyllis Trager Hyman, deceased in 2011, was crippled by infantile paralysis, but focused her acuity as a self-educated artist and thinker. Young adulthood brought a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and years of drugged haze, but with advances in antipsychotic medication, her artistry and quality of life blossomed. Hyman’s imaginative explorations included family, Judaism, music, confinement, interaction, commentary, and whimsy in nature – animals, birds, flowers, fresh air. Her work give her life grace and respite from chronic pain.
