Incidence rate analysis of cutaneous soft tissue sarcomas in the USA
Fadi Touma and others
Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare and heterogeneous, with cutaneous STS (CSTS) lacking recent epidemiological data. This study analyses CSTS incidence from 2000 to 2019 using SEER data, identifying 18 181 cases. CSTS was more common in men and non-Hispanic Whites, with Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) being predominant. The overall CSTS incidence was 11.2 per 1 000 000 person-years, with KS having the highest rate. The study reveals a 1.4% annual decline in CSTS rates and highlights ethnic disparities, especially in KS incidence among Non-Hispanic Black patients.

A survey of how frequently UK-based dermatology clinicians apply sun protection factor and the variables influencing this
Amber Blood and others
This study evaluates sunscreen application practices among UK dermatology clinicians, revealing that only 10% meet recommended reapplication guidelines. Factors such as skin type, gender, product preferences and topical treatments significantly influence sun protection factor (SPF) use. Findings underscore the need for clearer clinical guidelines and practical solutions to enhance adherence and inform patient education.

A red nodule in the umbilicus of an older man
Sarah Winter and others
This case report is the first in literature to document a syringocystadenoma papilliferum occurring in an umbilicus. This report discusses the various differentials that should be considered for a red nodule in the umbilicus. We also discuss the clinical and histopathologicial presentation of syringocystadenoma papilliferum, and the investigations and management to consider with this diagnosis.

Efficacy and safety of microneedling with topical insulin compared with placebo in the treatment of atrophic scars: a prospective study and literature review
Bushra Karkour and others
This prospective study evaluated the efficacy and safety of microneedling combined with topical insulin for treating various atrophic scars, including those from acne and cutaneous leishmaniasis. Results showed significant improvements in scar appearance and patient quality of life, particularly in post-acne scars (P = 0.001 and P = 0.002, respectively). These findings suggest that this combined treatment is a promising and effective option for atrophic scars, warranting further research with larger sample sizes to confirm the results.

Skin cancer screening practices of UK hairdressers and barbers for their customers: a preliminary study
Helen Fleming and others
Regular self-screening for suspicious moles or skin lesions can help identify early skin cancers, improving the prognosis of the patient; however, most skin cancers develop in the difficult to self-screen head-and-neck area. Hairdressers and barbers observe the head-and-neck area closely during routine hair appointments and could advise customers of suspicious skin changes. UK hairdressers’ and barbers’ skin cancer screening practices for their customers have not previously been investigated. The study aimed to determine whether a stratified random sample of UK hair professionals had received training in skin cancer awareness, and were screening or advising their customers, to investigate influences and deterrents to screening and advising, and attitudes towards skin cancer awareness training.

Trisomy 18 with widespread calcinosis cutis
Airin Sato and others
Rapid advancements in neonatal care have resulted in a long-term survival in cases of trisomy 18, and few reports of dermatological comorbidities exist. Organ calcification during the fetal stage is known to be associated with chromosomal abnormalities. We describe the case of a 6-year-old East Asian girl with trisomy 18 who presented with calcinosis cutis.

Investigating the potential of oncolytic viruses in the treatment of melanoma: where do we go from here?
Michaela Houghton and Annwyne Houldsworth
Melanoma is a common type of skin cancer that may be successfully treated with oncolytic viruses. Innovative gene transformation of novel viruses are able to infect cancer cells and allow the host to mount an inflammatory immune response to the tumour. Combination therapies, using factors that stimulate the cytotoxic response to cancer and gene therapy, can be combined with this kind of immunotherapy. Where will it take us next?

Cutaneous small vessel vasculitis in the COVID-19 era: a systematic review
Katherine Oakley Olson and others
Fever, malaise, urticaria and rash are common symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). These symptoms can also occur as adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccines. However, the occurrence of serious autoimmune reactions due to COVID-19 infection or its vaccine is quite rare. Cutaneous small vessel vasculitis (CSVV) is an autoimmune disorder that manifests with palpable purpura and petechiae involving the extremities. It results from neutrophilic inflammation within and around dermal vessels and is usually self-limited. We report a thorough systematic review of CSVV occurring in the COVID-19 era.
