SSJJ and the wider Japanese studies community mourn the loss of a pioneering scholar and friend, Takashi Inoguchi, who passed away on 27 November 2024.
Dr. Inoguchi was a leading authority in political science, foreign affairs, and education. Over nearly five decades, he taught generations of students as a professor at Sophia University, the University of Tokyo, and Chuo University. From 2009 ‒2017, he also served as President of Niigata Prefectural University. His prolific contributions included over 100 books and hundreds of scholarly articles in both Japanese and English. In recognition of his lifetime achievements, he received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in 2023.
Beyond his pioneering research in Japanese politics, Dr. Inoguchi played a pivotal role in the development of academic publishing. He was instrumental in founding and managing numerous international journals, including the Japanese Journal of Political Science, International Relations of the Asia-Pacific, and the Asian Journal of Comparative Politics.
For more than two decades, Dr. Inoguchi was an invaluable member of SSJJ’s International Editorial Board. His wisdom and guidance shaped the journal’s academic trajectory and editorial operations, including the selection of the ISS-OUP Prize, an annual award recognizing SSJJ’s best paper.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, students, and friends during this time of loss. Dr. Inoguchi’s legacy will continue to inspire and guide the field of Japanese studies for generations to come.
