About the Journal
The mission of Toxicological Sciences, the official journal of the Society of Toxicology, is to publish a broad spectrum of impactful research in the field of toxicology.
The primary focus of Toxicological Sciences is on original research articles. The journal also provides expert insight via contemporary, in-depth, and systematic reviews, as well as forum articles and editorial content that addresses important topics in the field.
The scope of Toxicological Sciences is focused on a broad spectrum of impactful toxicological research that will advance the multidisciplinary field of toxicology ranging from basic research to model development and application, and decision making. Submissions will include diverse technologies and approaches including, but not limited to: bioinformatics and computational biology, biochemistry, exposure science, histopathology, mass spectrometry, molecular biology, population-based sciences, tissue and cell-based systems, and whole-animal studies. Integrative approaches that combine realistic exposure scenarios with impactful analyses that move the field forward are encouraged.
Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Accessibility
Toxicological Sciences follows the guidelines of the Society of Toxicology.

Submissions
Toxicological Sciences uses ScholarOne Manuscripts for online submission. This system facilitates convenient uploading of original and revised manuscripts, as well as online reviewing and communication among authors, editors, and reviewers.
For complete preparation and submission instructions, including word counts for all manuscript types, visit the Information for Authors page.
Original Research Articles
See Information for Authors for complete instructions.
Research Brief
A Research Brief is a concise, impactful study with high quality and strong interest within the broad field of toxicology. These articles may not fit the criteria for a full “Research Article,” but contain data/information that is of general interest to the readership. Research Briefs may be edited for clarity or length and are subject to standard (not accelerated) peer review. See Information for Authors for complete instructions.
Contemporary Reviews
Contemporary Reviews provide expert analysis of important and emerging areas in the field of toxicology. These articles will be made freely available to all readers for 30 days post publication; however, authors are responsible for printed color figure charges. Authors may submit a proposal via email ([email protected]) for the Editor's comment prior to manuscript submission. See Information for Authors for complete instructions.
In-Depth Reviews
In-Depth Reviews require more text than a Contemporary Review, to provide a thorough, balanced understanding of important issues in the field of toxicology. To ensure a balanced perspective, authors must describe their process for identifying and including research papers in the review. These articles will be made freely available to all readers for 30 days post publication; however, authors are responsible for printed color figure charges. Authors may submit a proposal via email ([email protected]) for the Editor's comment prior to manuscript submission. See Information for Authors for complete instructions.
Systematic Reviews
Toxicological Sciences accepts high-quality submissions of systematic reviews and systematic maps. We also encourage submissions related to methodologies that advance the development of best practices in application of systematic review in toxicology and risk assessment, or commentaries on best use or best practices related to systematic reviews in evidence based toxicological assessments. We encourage the use of Dryad Digital Repository (Dryad), similar publicly available repositories, or protocol registration sites (e.g., PROSPERO) for protocols. Systematic reviews in toxicology involve a predefined, multistep process to identify, select, critically assess, and synthesize evidence from scientific studies to reach a conclusion. Authors may submit a proposal via email ([email protected]) for the Editor's comment prior to manuscript submission. See complete Systematic Review Guidelines.
Forum
Forum are discussions and commentaries providing an interface between toxicology and public policy. Commentaries should briefly discuss a sharply focused topic of recent relevant policy decisions or experimental research. These manuscripts must also provide a critical and balanced view of the issue or research area. It is expected that timely meetings and workshops will result in topics suitable for Forum articles. However, Toxicological Sciences does not publish meeting reports per se. Forum articles must be about the topic of interest in the field and not a particular meeting. Authors may submit a proposal via email ([email protected]) for the Editor's comment prior to manuscript submission. See Information for Authors for complete instructions.
ToxPoint
ToxPoint articles are short, editorial manuscripts making a succinct point regarding emerging areas of toxicology that are particularly timely and important. The purpose is to stimulate interest in various areas of toxicology by providing a platform for making a point regarding an opinion, pointing out the significance of recent literature, pointing the way toward new approaches/technologies, or describing the tipping point of controversial subject matter. Articles may be peer reviewed and publication is at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief. ToxPoint articles are freely available to all readers for 30 days post publication. See Information for Authors for complete instructions.
Letters to the Editor
Letters to the Editor regarding published articles should be submitted within 2 months of mailing of the printed journal. Letters may be peer-reviewed for factual accuracy and originality. Unsubstantiated claims or opinions are not permitted. Each accepted letter will be sent to the author(s) of the original paper so that any reply may be published simultaneously with the first letter. Final publication of either letter is at the discretion of the Editor. See Information for Authors for complete instructions.
Supplementary Material
Supplementary Material is supporting data/material that cannot be included in the printed version for reasons of space and that is not essential for inclusion in the full text of the manuscript but would nevertheless benefit the reader. It should not be essential to understanding the conclusions of the manuscript but should contain information that is additional or complementary and directly relevant to the manuscript content. For more detailed information, please see Supplementary Material Guidelines. Large files should be submitted to a data repository prior to submission of the manuscript.
Digital Repositories
To increase transparency and reproducibility, authors are encouraged to make original or raw data, images, and/or code available to the general scientific public as part of their publication by posting to the Dryad Digital Repository or a comparable publicly available database prior to manuscript submission. The DOI number assigned to the data should be included within the manuscript. Currently, Dryad fees for data to accompany manuscripts accepted by ToxSci are paid by the journal.
See Information for Authors for complete manuscript preparation and submission information.
Peer Review
Toxicological Sciences utilizes a peer review process whereby reviewers’ names are kept confidential. For more information about peer review, see Policies and General Guidelines.
Advance Access
Accepted manuscripts are initially published ahead of print in their "Accepted Manuscript" form as soon as possible post-acceptance, generally within one week of receipt by the publisher. More information, including how to cite Advance Access papers, can be found on the Advance Access page.
Open Access Option
Toxicological Sciences offers the option of publishing under either a standard licence or an open access licence. Please note that some funders require open access publication as a condition of funding. If you are unsure whether you are required to publish open access, please do clarify any such requirements with your funder or institution.
Should you wish to publish your article open access, you should select your choice of open access licence in our online system after your article has been accepted for publication. You will need to pay an open access charge to publish under an open access licence.
Details of the open access licences and open access charges.
OUP has a growing number of Read and Publish agreements with institutions and consortia which provide funding for open access publishing. This means authors from participating institutions can publish open access, and the institution may pay the charge. Find out if your institution is participating.
